Wooden playground equipment is becoming the popular choice for primary school and nursery playgrounds up and down the country.
And we are often asked about the advantages of wooden playground equipment in comparison to other popular playground equipment materials, such as metal and plastic.
So, we thought we would highlight the benefits of using natural materials when designing and manufacturing playground equipment.
Bringing Children Closer To Nature
In the eyes of a child, brightly coloured metal or plastic playground equipment looks fun and exciting. However, the combination of the Great British weather and general wear and tear will quickly take its toll. And before long, the once brightly coloured play equipment won’t look as appealing.
Thankfully, wooden playground equipment always looks amazing! Even if we do say so ourselves. Playground equipment made from quality and durable natural materials looks far more sophisticated and blends beautifully with its natural surroundings.
Wooden playground equipment will encourage children to connect with nature. It will also provide an opportunity for children to learn about the environment.
Natural Materials Are Sustainably Sourced
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have seen the many campaigns and recent news articles about plastic pollution. The one and only, Sir David Attenborough, is forever talking about the importance of using sustainable sources instead of plastic.
So, it goes without saying that wooden playground equipment is better for the environment. Here at Discovering Days, all our playground equipment is made using sustainable sources. Primarily, we use Scandinavian Redwood, which is a fast-growing timber.
Sustainability is measured by the length it takes from planting a tree to the time it is ready for felling. Scandinavian Redwood can be planted, matured, and felled within 25 years – a relatively short time when compared to other woods, such as Oak. Deforestation can be kept to a minimal by regularly replanting trees and cycling the areas for felling.
Although Scandinavian Redwood costs us a little more than other materials would, we know it’s worth it. And we’re proud to use a sustainably sourced material.
Wooden Playground Equipment Lasts Longer
Metal playground equipment is incredibly durable and will last a long time. However, the weather causes the paint to peel and the metal to rust. This leaves rough and sharp exposed edges, which can be very dangerous to children.
In comparison, our wooden playground equipment will last for at least a decade and will remain safe for children to use. After all, Scandinavian Redwood is known for its durability and longevity.
Plus, we treat it to ensure it’s future-proof. All our wooden playground equipment undergoes a high-pressure vacuum process using the latest TANALITH preservatives. This provides long term protection against wood decay and insect attack and prevents the wood from rotting for up to 60 years.
We also ensure our equipment is thoroughly sanded and smooth, so there is no risk of splinters. Better yet, our tantalised wood is non-toxic perfectly safe for humans, meaning it’s much better for little ones than plastics or heavily varnished wood.
Opportunity For Bespoke Playground Equipment
Unlike plastic and metal play equipment, wooden playground equipment is fully customisable. We can design, build and manufacture any type of bespoke playground equipment you want.
Perhaps you just want a variation of one of our standard pieces. Or you may have an idea for a brand new design. Whatever you can think of, we can do it! Some of our previous customers have customised our ever-popular Wooden Mud Kitchens and our Hobbit Houses.
